Getting fit for the hills!
If last weekends foray into the Lake District taught me anything, it was that I am a long way from being fit for the Himalaya trek. I could do it at a struggle, but I'd be leaving out any room for enjoyment. For the price I've paid, and for the cause, it's time to start taking my fitness more seriously. It's just under 17 weeks to go and so today I took the horrible step of doing something I previously loathed; I rejoined the gym.I'm going to be following, as closely as possible, a fitness programme found in the book; "the Ultimate Hillwalking Skills handbook". It's a handy read, published in association with Trail Magazine, that holds a multitude of topics that make walking in the hills a more pleasurable experience (if that last sentence sounded a bit false, it's probably because it was plagiarised from the Product Review on Amazon!).
There are a few events interrupting the programme; a trip to Switzerland being one, but that should more than make up for deviating from the plan.
So tomorrow, I head into the gym, aiming to visit twice a week, as well as keeping up the hillwalking every weekend. Who knows, before I catch the plane to Kathmandu, I might even revisit Scafell Pike and have another bash at it!
