Gornergrat and Riffelalp

A later start today on account of my Swiss friend Monika arriving for a couple of days. When we were ready for the off, first thing was a trip up to Gornergrat to admire the view. This was my first time up there. At 3000 metres, you are given a 360 degree panoramic view of numerous 4000m peaks and equally impressive glaciers. Touristy bit done, we took the train back down to Riffelalp, where we set out on a combination of woodland, glacial lakes and meadows walk to Sunegga.

Not far in, just as you cross the Gornegrat railway, we spotted some Marmots, and managed a pretty decent shot of one of them.

Usually the Matterhorn can be seen in some of the lakes in the area, but on this occasion, the cloud cover was too great, although it was a sunny day.

By the time we reached the last lake, Leisee, the weather had darkened, but Monika was still able to take a quick dip. Walk finished, we took the cog railway from Sunegga down to Zermatt.
